Our School Awards
Exceptional Basketball Teams

Our basketball teams produced some exceptional performances this year.

Year 7 basketball team have shown a great deal of promise in their early games – having won 2 out of the 3 Central Venue competitions and hence establishing their place in the Year 7 St Helens Cup final. The players faced St Cuthberts in the final, which turned out to be a nail-biting affair. Scores were even at the end of the game, leaving the title to be decided by free throws – luckily Rainford held their nerve more than Cuthies, and secured the win. Excellent performances throughout the tournaments by all players, and especially the captain Harry Barton. Squad includes – James Farrar, Nick Power, Tom Hunt, Jack Munn, Jack Kirkbride, Hayden Roper, Josh Johnson, James Yardley

Year 10 came 2nd in the 3 way final that took place between Rainford, De La Salle and Sutton. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, the games were far shorter than anticipated and so not all players were able to get a great deal of court time. Neverthless, the Year 10 team were outstanding in their efforts, and continued to close the gap between themselves and the Sutton High team, with respect to understanding, confidence and skill. David Markham, Sam Pape, John Pape, Phil Wynn, Ben Sephton, Eric Chow, George Dunne, Steven Glover, Josh  and Lineker Ormrod made up the team, and represented the School impeccably.

Year 11 finished off their School basketball careers with an outstanding demonstration of high quality basketball, against a Sutton team who have been close rivals in the past. Rainford Year 11’s absolutely dominated the play – with a rock solid defense that Sutton found practically impossible to unlock, and an offense which had all the hallmarks of a top-flight team – pace, flare, precision and determination. The year 11’s played with an almost telepathic understanding of each others game on finals night, and left a broken Sutton team in their wake. Outstanding performances all round, Steven Taylor was tireless, Ste Lathom deadly with his shooting and support play, Jamie Hodson, Robert Chan, Anton Roberts, Andy Johnson and – man of the match Graham Coombs, whose consistency, accuracy and work rate in offensive and defensive positions were magnificent.
