Rainford triumphed over St.Cuthberts in an enthralling game of rugby league at Liverpool St Helens to be crowned St Helens School Champions and avenge the early-season defeat in the English Schools competition.
Rainford took an eight point lead through tries from Tom Pilkington and Callum Welsby. St Cuthberts responded with a converted try to trail by 2 points at half-time. In the second half, Rainford struggled with injuries and St.Cuthberts piled on the pressure scoring 2 more tries to lead 16-8. However, the Rainford boys showed courage, determination and a winning mentality that reflected a refusal to be beaten. This never-say-die attitude was exemplified by the leadership of Captain Callum Welsby who suffered badly with cramp, but still managed to cross the try-line twice to complete his hat-trick. Matt Savage kicked on conversion and the final score was 18-16.
It would be hard to single out any individuals to give special praise because the whole squad gave their all… and then a little more, but credit should be given for Adam Fenney’s kick chase that put such pressure on the defending team that they turned the ball over, allowing Rainford to get possession and score in the final minutes of the game. Callum Welsby’s all-round game was immense and he was a clear Man of the Match. Finally, Tom Tunstall deserves credit for his brave decision (against all his competitive instincts) to come off the pitch when injured and unable to run. He battled on bravely for the team, but ultimately accepted that he would let his mates down unless he was substituted.
So, well done boys! Enjoy the success. Train hard through the summer and return in September bigger, stronger and faster.
