Our Year 7 rugby team have been switching codes all season, playing both League and Union – with a great deal of success! As you are aware they have won the St Helens Rugby League tournament, and perhaps you may be unaware that they have also won the County and Regional stages of the Emerging Schools Rugby Union Cup.
As a result of their success in the Emerging Schools Cup they were invited down to London to play in the National stages, where the final would be played at Twickenham, during half time. The team have only just returned from this ‘tour’, which took place on the 4th and 5th of May at Staines Rugby Union Club in West London.
The team were a credit to the school, and conducted themselves impeccably. The tournament was a 12 a side tournament on mini rugby pitches, which did not lend itself to our expansive style of play. However, the boys battled hard against the other 9 regional winners from places as far away as Cornwall and East Anglia, and managed to finish in 7th position – in the country!!
It is important to remember that this team has never played Rugby Union before, and managed to finish 7th out of the 3225 Schools that took part in this competition alone – an outstanding feat, and tremendous achievement. So well done to all those players who took part – not only on the tour, but also to those who made a valuable contribution along the way…….
