Superbike Champion and fastest woman ever at the TT races, Maria Costello joined Rainford pupils at a special event to boost junior athletics across St Helens.

The JAE event held at Edge Hill University is a support programme that assists schools in helping their most Gifted and Talented young sports people manage the demands of not only their sport, but their school and social life.

The aim is to identify a young person’s needs and, with the assistance of teachers, parents and coaches, give that person the opportunity to maximise their sporting potential while reducing the conflicting demands that developing sporting talent often brings.

Maria gave an inspirational talk to pupils about the demands that top sporting success can bring and the dedication it takes to get there.  As part of the day at Edge Hill University pupils were given an insight into athletics lifestyle management, sports related injuries and developing multi skills. Pupils will now be assigned a mentor within school to give ongoing support and guidance within their sport.
