Rainford High Technology College has been named the 2007 Enterprise Game Champion. Schools from across the Borough competed for the title at the Enterprise Game Championships, hosted by St Helens Chamber.
In total 11 teams competed at the event, which was held at The World of Glass on December 12th. Sara Williams, Director of Enterprise Development at St Helens Chamber, explained the concept behind the championships: “The Enterprising St Helens Team was set up at the Chamber a little over 12 months ago, thanks to funding from the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative, to bridge the gap between schools and businesses to make sure that young people in our Borough fully understand the world of enterprise.
“The Enterprise Game Championships are just one of the ways we hope to be able to do this in a fun and interactive way.”
The Enterprise Game was originally developed the eighties but was recently bought by Halton Education Business Partnership, who have modernised the game for the 21st Century.
Pat Smedley from Halton Education Business Partnership explained: “The essence of the game is makesell- deliver. Playing the game shows students how a business works and helps develop their enterprising skills, in line with the work related learning aspect of the national curriculum.”
Each team that competed in the Championships had a member of the local business community as their banker, keeping track of the activities. “Involving local business people was an important aspect of the event,” added Sara Williams.
“The children were able to hear their first hand experiences of risk taking in business, making the game they were playing more real.”
At the end of the day, the awards were presented to the winning teams by the businesses. Richard Tahern, from logistics company Wincanton, was charged with presenting the first prize award to Rainford High, who finished the competition, making a total profit of £4,690,000. He said: “I’ve seen some quick minds today, some deviousness, some enterprising, but most of all some fun.”
A special award was also presented to Sam Sheen from Rainford High, who was awarded the title of ‘Most Profitable Individual’ in the Championships.
St Helens Chamber would like to thank all the businesses who gave up their valuable time to participate in the Championships and sponsoring the prizes, namely; St Helens Rugby League Football Club, Prontaprint, Wincanton, The Big Green Project, Temploy Recruitment, Kier NorthWest, Reality Music School and Helena Housing.
