The Rainford Sixth Form Champions are a group of students who have a particular interest in pursuing a career either working with children or in an education setting.
The program aims to provide them with practical experience of working with primary school children both at Rainford and at different primary schools across the borough. The champions run a number of different activities for children and have worked with children from Year 1 to Year 6.
Over the past few months we have been working in partnership with Bleak Hill Primary school. We sent a class a set of ‘Wonder’ books by RJ Palacio for the Year 5 students to read and produce work about. The work they completed included; character profiles, book synopsis and writing their own precepts. The primary children thoroughly enjoyed reading the books and were extremely positive and enthusiastic about the project.
After they had finished reading the book and completing activities some of the Sixth Form Primary Champions; James Critchley, Amber Howard, William Wharton, Tom Carr, Chloe Twist and Chris Hand visited Bleak Hill to discuss the books with the students, photograph some of the work they had done and produce a written summary of the project for the Bleak Hill Community Primary Website.
One of the year 5 students wrote “I really enjoyed reading this book because it taught me that we need to be kind to everyone no matter what they look like”.
The students also wrote their own rules to live by, a theme which runs through the entire book. Some of their rules included; ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’ and ‘when you have the choice of being right or being kind, choose kind’.
We were all extremely impressed by the quality of the work the primary children produced and the enthusiasm with which they spoke about the book. We look forward to working with more Year 5 classes in the near future.
